A CCTV buyer's checklist for shops, offices and depots

Good CCTV starts with a plan, not a box of cameras. Use this checklist before you buy, whether you run a shop, an office, a school or a depot.

1. Decide what you need to see

List the areas that matter: entrances, tills, stores, yards, gates and parking. Cameras are placed to cover people's faces and activity at those points, not just wide empty views.

2. Day and night

If the area is dark at night, choose cameras with night vision. Outdoor cameras should be weatherproof, built for rain, dust and heat.

3. Recorder and storage

A DVR or NVR records the video. The number of cameras, video quality and hard drive size decide how many days of footage you keep. Ask for the storage to be sized to your needs.

4. Remote viewing

With an internet connection at the recorder, you can watch live or play back footage on your phone. Ask for the setup to be done and shown to you at handover.

5. Power and backup

Power cuts happen. A backup battery or UPS keeps the system recording for a time.

6. Installation and support

Neat cabling and correct mounting make the system last. Choose a supplier who installs, trains you and answers when you call.
