Home security in Uganda: how to build a layered system

19 October 2026 · 4 min read · By the High & Low Technologies team

No single device makes a home safe. The best protection uses layers, so that if one layer fails, another still alerts you.

Layer 1: the perimeter

Good gates, locks and lighting make a break-in harder. Outdoor cameras and a video doorbell show who is at the gate before you open it.

Layer 2: sensors on doors and windows

Door and window sensors tell you the moment something is opened. Indoor motion sensors cover corridors and rooms when the house is empty or at night.

Layer 3: a loud siren and phone alerts

A siren deters intruders and alerts neighbours, while phone alerts tell you straight away, wherever you are. You can arm and disarm from your phone.

Layer 4: cameras

Cameras give you evidence and let you check on the house. Add them to the places that matter most, such as the entrance and the compound.

Habits that help

  • Keep keys and spare keys out of sight.
  • Test the alarm every month.
  • Tell family members how to arm and disarm it.
  • Think about a backup battery for power cuts.
